Kanniks is the recipient of numerous awards such as the prestigious McKnight Fellowship from the American Composers Forum, the Ohio Heritage Fellowship Award, the Just Community Award from the University of Cincinnati. His research on the nottusvara sahityas of Dikshitar won him awards for the best paper and presentation at the Madras Music Academy.
